AUSTRALIAN Web Hosting

What is Web Hosting?

While not considered sexy, web hosting serves as the backbone of your website. It’s an essential component. Your site resides on a computer server with a backup power source on a permanent internet connection. The last thing you need is your business being affected by a downed website.

Let’s talk about speed briefly.  Unless you’re paying extra for a Virtual Private Server ( VPS ) websites typically share the same server with each other. That means server resources have to be distributed, that is to say, divided across every website. The more websites on that server can mean less resources allocated to each site. The other contributing factor here is your hosting account.

When you’re choosing a hosting plan, many hosting companies, especially the bigger ones, will pad out their hosting plans with extra storage that you don’t need. This provides the illusion of value. Unlike other types of digital data, your website takes up very little space. What’s important is resources.

I’ve personally run into problem before. Hosts can, and do throttle resources in the background. This can be quite subtle at first ( slower page speed ), and become more obvious as time progresses. Our plans are designed with resources, not space being our focus.

Good & Cheap Hosting? Hmmm...

It only takes a cursory glance at various web hosting companies online to realise that there are many cheap hosting plans to choose from. As previously mentioned certain elements like storage, with deliberate resource throttling provide the illusion of value.

This translates to substantial profit for the host. Why? Storage is cheap, while hardware like CPU’s and RAM are more costly – and these essentially power the resources that your site needs to run.

Going back to cheap hosting, you can get hosting for as little as $5. Even less if you look at US hosting. Unfortunately many customers go the cheap option, not realising the level of support they will receive. I know what cheap support feels like. It’s normally not local, and it typically resembles a “get in line” type of ticket support by someone who isn’t really invested in the problem.

Given the nature of how these support systems operate, forming a relationship with your host is next to impossible – you never know who’ll you be speaking to next.
